I knew I was going to like Penang from the moment I arrived; I was welcomed by a fantastic sunset over Batu Ferringhi beach!

Penang, once known as Pulau Pinang, is a Malaysian state located on the northwest coat of Peninsular Malaysia. Just an hour flight from Kuala Lumpur, Penang is famous for its soft sandy beaches and is regarded as the food capital of Malaysia and was listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2008.

The taxi ride from Penang International Airport took approximately 1 hour to our hotel in Batu Ferringhi and cost RM74.00. We arrived at our hotel, Parkroyal Penang Resort, just in time for a lovely sunset! We were greeted with a welcome drink and checked into room 266. The room was stunning! Even though the hotel was undergoing refurbishments, it didn’t affect our stay. Three nights, with breakfast, cost us £250!

Our first full day in Penang consisted of a cooking class that I had pre-booked called Penang Homecooking School. I’d booked it quite far in advance which meant the host, Pearly, gave me the pick of the menu!

At 8:45am, Pearly’s husband, Chandra, picked us up from our hotel and took us to a local food market where we met the rest of the group. At the food market we saw lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. We tried some food including a really tasty peanut crumpet!

We then proceeded to Pearly & Chandra’s home to begin the cooking class. There was six of us in the class and we each had our own workstation.

We cooked three dishes; Daging Masak Kicap (beef curry), Curry Kapitan (chicken curry) and Mix Vegetable Archar (vegetables).

After we cooked our lunch, the six of us sat round the table with Pearly and enjoyed our food! I can’t recommend this cooking class enough – it was really interesting to learn about the foods at the market as well as getting to know Pearly.

Chandra dropped us back at our hotel at around 2:45pm. We spent the rest of the afternoon chilling around the hotel pool as well as making our way onto the beach, which backs onto the hotel.

We were still full from our earlier cooking class so we got 10 chicken satay for RM9.00 to share from Long Beach Cafe along Batu Ferringhi. I love chicken satay! We also checked out the local nightmarket and had a couple of cocktails at Bora Bora.

On our second day in Penang, we checked out Georgetown. Georgetown is the capital of Penang and is filled with amazing street art.

To get to Georgetown from Batu Ferringhi, we got bus 101 from outside our hotel. The journey cost RM2.70 each, each way (the bus doesn’t give change so make sure you have the correct money!). The journey took about 45 minutes and we got off at the bus terminal in Georgetown.

We walked up and found the swings and bike street art ourselves, and of course posed for photos!

In 2012, Penang’s municipal council hired London-trained Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic, to add artwork to the streets of Georgetown.

We then walked up to Little India and got a trishaw for 1 hour for RM40.00 to show us the street art.

After spending a few hours exploring, we took the 101 bus back to Batu Ferringhi and arrived back at the hotel where we spent the rest of the afternoon chilling at the pool.

Dinner was at Golden Thai where I had Hokkien Mee Seafood overlooking the beach.

The following morning it was time to say goodbye to Penang before making our way to the next island – Langkawi.

I really enjoyed Penang and wish I’d had longer there (not just to take advantage of the cheap and tasty satay!). There’s plenty more to do in Penang; take a look here.
