Vietnam

I visited Vietnam in April/May 2019 for just over two weeks.

I started off in Hanoi, where I spent two nights before taking an overnight boat trip to Halong Bay. I then returned back to Hanoi for a night, before visiting Sapa on a 2 day/1 night trip.

I then made my way to Hue for 2 nights, and did a one day Hai Van Pass trip to Hoi An where I spent 4 nights.

My last stop was to Ho Chi Minh City for 3 nights before returning back to the U.K.

If you’re entering Vietnam with a ‘British Citizen’ passport, you don’t need a visa for up to 15 days. My trip worked out that I would be in Vietnam for 16 days (typical) so I applied for a 30 day visa (approximately £20.00). You can find out more information here. Applying for the e-Visa was an easy process, and I received email confirmation that my visa had been approved within a couple of days.

My international flights were booked through STA Travel, and I flew with Qatar Airways.

My internal flights were with Vietnam Airlines, and I booked these directly through their website.

The majority of my hotels were booked through Booking.com, and were free cancellation up until the week before check-in. This gave me flexibility if I needed to adjust my itinerary, and also meant that I didn’t have to pay upfront for the hotels.

Vietnam is a beautiful country with plenty of places to explore. The local people are extremely friendly and absolutely adore you if you try to speak their language; I learnt a couple of phrases before I left – hello, thank you and goodbye – through an app that I downloaded for free on my phone, and it made such a difference.

The food is amazing; my favourite dishes were Pho Bo (beef noodle soup) and Bún Chả (pork, noodles, salad) and I literally came back from Vietnam full of pork spring rolls – I couldn’t stop eating them! I also found it relatively cheap to eat and drink in Vietnam, compared to the U.K.

I learnt a lot about the Vietnamese War during my two weeks in Vietnam too which was quite interesting.

I really recommend visiting Vietnam if you ever get the opportunity. Read more about my trip here: –
