My first taste of Asia was in Bangkok, Thailand where I started my two and a half week trip with my best friend, Lucy, in October 2015. I have since visited a second time in April 2016.
Once we arrived in Bangkok, we proceeded to immigration, got a stamp in my passport (yay), and took the Bangkok Airport Link to our hotel. We checked into the Siam@Siam Design Hotel Bangkok located in central Bangkok, just a five-minute walk from National Park BTS Skytrain Station. After 16 hours of travelling, we unpacked our suitcases, put on our bikinis and decided to spend the rest of the afternoon at the rooftop infinity pool which overlooked the cityscape, before having a quick nap and a bite to eat at a very interesting restaurant…
So, the very interesting restaurant I mentioned was called Cabbages & Condoms. I thought it would be a sleazy restaurant but despite the potentially off-putting name, it was a really cute restaurant with lovely food! The idea of the restaurant is to promote better understanding and acceptance of family planning and to generate income support to various development activities of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA). Yes, you do get given free condoms when your bill comes out! As it was my first proper meal in Thailand, I of course opted for the Thai Green Curry washed down with a piña colada. My rice was super cute too – brown and white rice in the shape of a heart!
After a well needed sleep, it was our first and only full day in Bangkok and I wasn’t prepared for the sticky heat it had to offer! We started our day off by riding in the famous tuk tuks that fly around Thailand; I was just grateful for the breeze! We visited various temples including Wat Pho, took a long tail boat on the Chao Phraya River, visited The Grand Palace and took a walk down Khao San Road.
After a very tiring day, we decided to have dinner at the hotel and drinks at our rooftop bar!
Next stop: Chiang Mai
